About the Department

The Department of Theatre at the University of Ottawa is founded on the belief that theatre research and theatre practice can and should exist side by side. Strong theoretical knowledge and sound practical experience influence one another and lead toward greater creative undertakings in whichever facet of theatre one chooses.

The Department is further stimulated, and distinguishes itself, by its bilingualism, in terms of its programs, its research and its practice. This characteristic is not limited to language, although students may, for the most part, take their courses in either French or English. Our programs also give students the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of their own theatrical tradition as well as to be in contact with, and explore, the other culture. This creates an environment almost unique in the landscape of theatre studies in North America and is essential when studying theatre in Canada where Francophone and Anglophone traditions co-exist both in practice and in theory.
